Basketball Officials' Development Clinic
Prepare for the camp season and be head of the curve in preparation for OSAA's transition to 3-person mechanics! We provide individualized training for all levels of basketball officials, focusing on the fundamentals of officiating. Through our advanced teaching methods you will receive on-court instruction, a group breakdown session of your game film, and receive a take-home DVD (containing critique) to continue your studies off the court.
WHAT WE DO: Improve your Fundamentals of Officiating, including court coverage, positioning, movement, angles, rotations, call selection, mechanics, court presence, and game management skills. Using our teaching methods, we will accelerate your retention level and help you understand the basics of 3-person mechanics.
DATES: 6 Sundays this Spring: April 21, 28; May 5, 12, 19, 26. Each Sunday is a new clinic.
TIME: Each Sunday is divided into three (3) sessions, with three (3) games per session. Each session will have 1 hour recess for your film break-down:
Morning Session = 12:00 – 3:00 pm Afternoon Session = 3:00 – 7:00 pm Evening Session = 5:00 – 9:00 pm
WHERE: CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, NE 27th St. & NE Highland St., Portland. This is a well-organized tournament between top, men's, high school teams. Traditionally, play has been outstanding, with good sportsmanship, good atmosphere.
COST: $20 per session – You will receive 3 evaluated games, one game DVD, and an individualized break-down of your DVD. Due to the overlap of sessions, attending only one session per Sunday is practical.
SIGN UP: We have limited openings which typically fill prior to the first weekend of games. Early sign up will guarantee your choice of Sunday and session time. Let us know your years of experience and if you have any previous 3-person experience. You must at least have experience in a high school association (or equivalent) and have the fortitude to referee boys, high school varsity.
Attire: Stripped referee shirt, whistle, shorts, and a willingness to learn and improve.
EMPHASIS: We will emphasize: 1. Being in the proper position, and maintaining an open look; 2. Identifying the competitive match-ups in your area; 3. Understanding when and when not to rotate; 4. Knowing when you have a closed look and leaving the play for your partners; 5. Knowing where your partners are, what they are doing, and where they are looking; 6. Knowing when not and when to make a crew call; 7. Understanding the game within the game and the art of officiating. 8. How to leverage game film to further improve your abilities.
